Abstract

The corona1 is an ionized gas at T ≃ 106 °K. Its base is at a height h ∼ 104 km above the photosphere, corresponding to ϱ ≃ 1.01 where ϱ = (R⨀ + h)/R⨀. The electron density Ne varies from ∼ 4 R× 108 cm-3 at ϱ = 1.01 to ∼ 2 × 106 cm-3 at ϱ = 2. The corona is heated by dissipation of mechanical energy originating in the convection zone.2
