Abstract
Having been relieved of his duties in St. Petersburg in 1803, Nicolay retired to his beloved Monrepos where the last seventeen years of his life were interrupted only by short visits during the winters to the capital. Monrepos, formerly known as Lill-Ladugard, also became the the home of Nicolay’s descendants. The beautiful park at Monrepos with its obelisk and classical statues seems to be Nicolay’s most lasting creation. Indeed, Monrepos, near Viipuri, now in the Soviet Union, is still maintained and has been converted into a summer resort and is visited steadily by thousands of tourists from both Finland and Russia.
