Abstract
The theory of adiabatic charged particle motion will be described from two points of view. First, from the more physical and intuitive point of view. This method is limited to first order effects in the radius of gyration, since higher order effects become difficult to visualize and one’s intuition becomes unreliable as a guide. Second, the formal theory of KRUSKAL (1962) will be reviewed and some results obtained with it described. This and other (see GARDNER, 1959) formal methods are systematic expansions and in principle should require no physical insight into the problem. In practice, as will be seen, the labor of the calculation can be greatly reduced by applying physical insight at the proper points.
