Abstract
The purpose of these two lectures is to summarize present theoretical understanding of the behavior of charged particles and plasma in the geomagnetic field. The summary is necessarily brief, and is at best only a guide to the published literature. It must be understood that the present understanding of particle behavior in the geomagnetic field is in an elementary form. The understanding does not yet provide a theory for particle acceleration and for the aurora and the associated Van Allen radiation belts, nor does it give a unique picture of what gas inflates the geomagnetic field during the main phase of a storm, nor does it give a clear understanding of the geomagnetic tail structure, etc., etc. But the understanding does give a picture of many simpler effects.
