Causes of Handicap in the Low Weight Infant

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Nutricia Symposium ((NUSY,volume 2))

Abstract

That infants of low birth weight have a higher than average incidence of all sorts of handicaps is no longer in dispute, equally there is general agreement that whereas the later progress of most infants of 2000–2500 g is not much different from that of larger born children from similar homes, below this birth weight the incidence of handicap increases steadily as birth weight further decreases (1).
