Abstract
Intrinsic polarization in B emission-line stars and in red variables is discussed. The peculiar wavelength-dependence of the polarization in Be stars, particularly the decrease in polarization in the ultraviolet, is explained by scattering from electrons in an asymmetrical envelope together with self-absorption in a hydrogen plasma.
Red variable stars show large polarizations in the ultraviolet. Unlikely configurations of the scattering envelope, with the opaque cloud in front of the star, are required to explain the observed polarizations by Rayleigh scattering on molecules in an asymmetric envelope. Difficulties with a model of elongated graphite grains oriented by a magnetic field are also discussed.
