Diagnostics of the Parameters of the Magnetosphere and of the Interplanetary Space by Means of Micropulsations

Abstract

Systematic investigations of micropulsations, which were begun in connection with the IGY, showed a great variety of types. It was revealed that pulsations contain useful information about outer space. Observations over a wide network of stations allow conclusions to be drawn on the location and movement of the boundary of the magnetosphere, the concentration of cold plasma at great distances from the earth’s surface, the energetic particles, the non-stationary processes developing in the geomagnetic trap during magnetic storms, etc. New possibilities of diagnostics of some of the parameters of the interplanetary space are suggested (e.g. mean velocity of the solar wind and structure of the interplanetary magnetic field). Methods of diagnostics and the results obtained are evaluated.
