Abstract

Approximately 50% of the United States can be classed as subhumid or drier. Most of this area lies in the 17 States west of the 96th meridian of longitude. Over much of it, the ever-present problem of meager soil moisture is complicated by strong, drying winds that steal water from surface layers and erode light soils.

Dr. J. H. Stoeckeler (deceased) was, at the time of his death, Soil Scientist for the North Central (formerly Lake States) Forest Experiment Station, Forest Service, U.S.D.A., St. Paul, Minnesota, U.S.A.
