Abstract

The application of epidemiological methods to the study of chronic diseases is now so widespread that it is hard to believe that the expansion of the subject really only began about twenty years ago. In that period it has proved to be one of the chief growing points in the whole of medicine. Perhaps its greatest successes have been in the cardiovascular field: most of what we know about the aetiology of coronary heart disease (chd) has been derived from epidemiology.
