Abstract

Platelets are formed by fragmentation of the cytoplasm of the megakaryocyte; they contain no nucleus and not long ago were thought to be rather primitive structures. In fact they are highly differentiated and specialized cellular elements. This is indicated by their intricate subcellular structure (for a review see 1): in addition to the usual equipment which includes lysosomes (2, 3), mitochondria, vacuoles, a complex microcanalicular system with indications of structures resembling a Golgi-apparatus (4, 5, 6, 7), more specialized elements are also found. These include storage organelles for biologically active amines (8, 9) and, most likely, adenine nucleotides, as well as a marginal bundle of microtubules running along the cytoplasmic membrane in the equatorial plane of the disc-shaped, circulating platelet (10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16).
