Abstract

The possibilities that the energetic ions in the radiation belts and in the auroral primaries might originate in the ionosphere or in the solar wind are examined. It is argued that there is no clear evidence favoring one source over the other on the basis of the observations that have been carried out to date. An entirely different type of observation is proposed as a means of providing a cheap and effective way of deciding this question and of providing information concerning the rate of accretion of inert gases by the atmosphere.
