Abstract

In this review the various phenomena that are associated with solar flares are described briefly, with particular attention being paid to effects that can be detected from satellites, space probes and rockets. Since most space physicists are quite well aware of the wide scope of their subject, it is not necessary to describe in detail everything that is likely to happen during and following a solar event. Instead, certain problem areas are discussed at some length, and other topics which are reasonably well understood are mentioned only in passing, if at all. A complete set of references for every topic is not given, since that would require a much too extensive bibliography; instead, review articles are cited where they are available, together with some key references which should make it easy for a reader interested in a particular topic to discover the literature for himself if he wishes.
