Abstract

It seemed logical to apply mechanical ventilation not only to adults and children with respiratory difficulties but also to infants. For our first cases we ventilated with the Bird apparatus via an oral endotracheal or a tracheostomy tube, but it soon became evident that the method would have to be modified to make it suitable for these small patients.
