Abstract

I have chosen to concentrate this discussion of laboratory measurements of ion-neutral reactions on D-region problems because that is where the most rapid progress is occurring. There have, to be sure, been advances in E- and F-region data since that subject was reviewed (Ferguson, 1969a) at the Madrid IAGA meeting in September, 1969. Some information about the energy dependences of rate constants has been obtained (Johnsen et al., 1970; Kaneko et al., 1970), some rate constant measurements have been improved (Fehsenfeid et al., 1970), a theory of the reaction has appeared (O’Malley, 1970), etc. These new data are all quantitative refinements however and have not significantly altered our broad view of the E- and F-region ion chemistry. The D-region ion chemistry was also reviewed (Ferguson, 1970) at the Madrid IAGA meeting but progress is occurring at such a rate that our views on D-region ion chemistry are constantly changing in major ways.
