The Evolution of the Galaxy as a Whole

Nearly all of the lectures here are concerned with the physics of the Galaxy as it is now. To describe its evolution we must ask how it was formed, how it has evolved to its present configuration, and what it can be expected to contain and how it will look in perhaps another 1010 years. These are the same questions that have been asked, and fairly satisfactorily answered, for stars over the last thirty years. But the corresponding problem, as it relates to galaxies, is very far from solution.
