We are now ready to characterize the Cartesian system. The basic metaphysical position established will be considered as the one to which orthodox Cartesians attempt to adhere. Malebranche, for example, as he himself stresses, is not an orthodox Cartesian. Rohault, La Forge, Régis, Le Grand, and in most respects Desgabets and Arnauld are or attempt to be orthodox Cartesians.
