Abstract
The nature of the biochemical mechanisms underlying the appearance of a specific enzyme in a specific tissue of the fetus at a specific time in development is among the most challenging of current biological problems. Advances in molecular biology have greatly increased our understanding of the means by which biological information is transferred from one generation of cells to the next and transcribed in each cell to produce its constituent proteins. It is not yet possible, within the framework of this hypothesis to explain either how a gene may determine the quantity of an enzyme produced, what determines the time in development at which the enzyme appears, or how certain cells of a multicellular organism may have a given enzyme or protein when other cells of the same organism with the same genome do not.
