Dense Media Separation

  • Chapter
Book cover Mineral Processing

Abstract

The processes considered in this chapter are variously called “sink-float”, “sink-and-float”, “dense-medium separation”, “heavy-medium separation” and “heavy-liquid separation” in response to their variations on the basic principle of dense media separation (usually abbreviated to DMS).* They may include:

  1. (a)

Separation in a quiet single bath

  2. (b)

Separation with controlled agitation of the bath

  3. (c)

Separation in a series of baths

  4. (d)

Separation in a single bath changing in density between top and bottom

  5. (e)

Use of hydraulically expanded separating media (e.g. Chance and Stripa processes)

  6. (f)

    Use of autogenous media

  7. (g)

    Use of blended heavy liquids

  8. (h)

Centrifugal aid, e.g. by cyclone bath.
