Abstract

Wave-particle interactions play an important part in the dynamics of the magneto-sphere, hence studies of VLF emissions contribute to the knowledge of magneto-spheric structure and behavior. Until relatively recently, most available data have been from ground based observations and these continue to be of importance, especially if direction finding (goniometer) techniques can be used to locate the ionospheric exit regions of the signals. Satellite measurements have the advantage that they are not affected by varying ionospheric transparency and a low altitude polar orbiting vehicle can give world coverage.
