Abstract
Since 1960 there has been a steadily increasing demand for high performance filters for the wavelength region λ > 2 μm and extending to λ∼ 1 mm. This demand has been due to a number of causes, the most important ones being:
-
The steady development of infrared techniques including Fourier transform spectrometers and the emergence of the far infrared lasers, e.g. CO2, H2O, HCN.
-
A special stimulus has come from space requirements, e.g. the Nimbus projects of Oxford/Heriot-Watt Universities, NOAA, NASA (GSFC) and JPL, and generally from ground and balloon-based infrared astronomy as well as the requirements of deep space probes.
