Numerical Experiments with a One-Dimensional Gravitational System by an Euler-Type Method

Summary

Evolutions of one-dimensional gravitational water-bag models are computed with an Euler-type method. More accurate than the Lagrange-type one, this method shows the separation of the system into a stable core of uniform phase density and a halo formed by thin filaments.

If our systems have a space extension greater than the Jeans length, the fragmentation into subsystems due to the Jeans instability appears only when the initial distribution of points is irregular.
