Abstract

According to one authority Tyssot was a well-read and well-educated man.1 Another described him as a man “d’une science encyclopédique.” 2 Yet another termed him “un homme intelligent et instruit.” 3 Since the critics did not explain how they arrived at their assessments I assume they were impressed by Tyssot’s display of erudition. To what extent were they correct in their impression?
