Towards an Empirically Motivated Grammatical Theory of Verbal Texts

  • Chapter
Studies in Text Grammar

Part of the book series: Foundations of Language ((FLSS,volume 19))

Abstract

The ever increasing intensity of (linguistic and non-linguistic) text theoretical research makes it possible and, at the same time, also necessary to take some of the basic points of the theory of grammar under closer examination.

This study is built up of two main chapters. The first chapter (‘Sentence Grammars and Text Grammars’) is a partly revised version of the first part of (1971e) while the second chapter (‘A Not Fixed Linearity Text Grammar. The Present Stage of Its Development’) is a new and the most detailed summary of the grammatical conception referred to in the title until now. The present form of this conception is not at last a result of discussions within the frame of the Project ‘Textlinguistics’ at the University of Constance and I owe, first of all, very much to the common work (still being) done together with H. Rieser. [Cf. Petöfi-Rieser (1972a), (1972b).] My works contained in the bibliography inform both about the phases of the development of the text-theoretical conception serving as a broader framework and of the ‘not fixed linearity text grammar’. The notes given here refer to this bibliography.
