Abstract

During the last three years a new process relative to waste refining has been developed in Denmark. The process is capable of handling industrial waste and household refuse, as well as sewage sludge from sewage treatment plants. Solid wastes and liquid combustible wastes are destroyed by means of pyrolysis, while the sludge is subject to a chemical/thermal sterilization. From the slag, the residue resulting from the pyrolytic destruction, valuable metals can be recovered. The remainder of the slag is processed together with the sterilized sludge into a soil-improving agent. A full scale plant has been built.
