Nuclear Genes Controlling Chloroplast Development in Barley

  • Conference paper

Abstract

Studies over the past few years indicate that the synthesis and maintenance of a functional chloroplast is under the control both of nuclear genes, and extra-nuclear genes contained in chloroplast DNA. Earlier speakers in this session of the symposium have examined the possible role of chloroplast DNA in coding for some of the components of the chloroplast. Of particular significance are the findings of S. G. Wildman and his colleagues. These workers have studied the pattern of inheritance of some chloroplast components in a number of interspecific hybrids of tobacco. It is apparent from their results that there is a very close interaction between the informational contents of nuclear DNA and chloroplast DNA, even to the extent where the two different subunits of a single chloroplast protein (Fraction I) are coded for by different DNAs; one by nuclear DNA and the other by chloroplast DNA.
