Abstract
Experimental determination of the distribution of minor constituents in the middle atmosphere between 20 and 80 km altitude, a region accessible only by balloons and rockets, is a neglected area of atmospheric research. The distributions of gaseous minor constituents in this region are governed by many processes: (a) the pattern and rate of troposphere-stratosphere and stratosphere-mesosphere exchange, (b) transport processes which influence the meridional and vertical redistribution of constituents at these levels, and (c) chemical reactions in the stratosphere and mesosphere. The distribution of particulate constituents in the stratosphere and mesosphere is further complicated by the influence of particle growth and sedimentation processes.
