Abstract

This paper reviews some recent significant developments in aeronomy which follow from observations of atomic oxygen (OI) emissions — in particular the three features at 1304, 5577, and 6300 Å. Other OI emissions as well as those of NI will not receive attention here since they do not figure as prominently in the advances of the last year or two. In general our selection of topics has been dictated by their relevance to atmospheric physics and chemistry, that is to problems of atmospheric composition and energy balance and to the nature and rate of aeronomically significant chemical reactions. Thus the aurora, for example, receives scant attention except where the interpretation of observations bears more upon the target atmosphere than upon the characteristics of the impinging particle flux.
