Abstract
Stretching this observation out of context, one might ask why another article on Gide. The answer is simple — he is inexhaustible, he is controversial and he is contemporary. On the occasion of the centenary of his birth (1969), for example, over and above the usual centennial tributes there was a great revival in Gidean studies. Under the inspiration of Claude Martin, a new group was formed, “L’Association des amis d’André Gide”, whose purpose is to sponsor and foster Gidean studies, methodology and bibliography. Thanks to this young group, new impetus has been given to the study of Gide.
