Abstract
The development of the fetus goes through two main stages. During the first ten weeks or so all the major organ systems of the body are formed. From about the 10th week to term, all the organs grow and mature but there are few new major developments. Most important congenital abnormalities are determined by the 10th week of pregnancy and this is why it is particularly important to avoid exposure to rubella (German measles) and possibly harmful drugs during the first three months of pregnancy.
