Rheumatic heart disease is a common condition. Its cause is not fully understood, but it is related to infections with the streptococcus haemolyticus. This organism is a common cause of sore throats and tonsillitis. The typical sequence of events is a streptoccal infection, such as a sore throat, which is followed a few days or weeks later by the onset of either acute rheumatic fever or an attack of chorea.
