Age and Growth Studies

  • Chapter
Lake Kariba

Abstract

The green bream belongs to the relatively less important group of fish species inhabiting the watershed of the Upper and Middle Zambezi River as well as the Kafue and Okavango Rivers. With the exception of some general data (e.g. Jackson, 1961a; Jubb, 1967) little is known about the biology of this fish, its age, growth, abundance, standing stock and production. It is found in the deeper and more sheltered waters of large rivers, particularly when older; also its abundance and standing stock in Lake Kariba seems to be larger in greater depths. Our results show the abundance and standing stock of the green bream in Lake Kariba to be 117 individuals and 15.96 kg per ha respectively. The purpose of this section is to determine the age composition, growth and available production of this fish.
