Abstract
Between the Azores and Gibraltar there is a belt of earthquakes which, with its eastward extension into the Mediterranean, marks the boundary between the African and Eurasian plates. There is no offset of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge at the western end of this belt, which goes through the East Azores Islands, and no indication of a continuation of the belt westwards into the western Atlantic.
