Abstract

Some aspects of the energy in seismic waves are discussed, with special reference to the problem of estimating the total energy released in earthquakes. A calculation is presented connecting the energy of a large earthquake with the size of the region in which significant deviatoric strain has accumulated prior to the earthquake.
