ELF-VLF Radio Wave Propagation

Part of the book series: NATO Advanced Study Institutes Series ((ASIC,volume 10))

Abstract

VLF and ELF radio waves propagating through the D region are primarily influenced by the electron concentration and the electron-neutral collision frequency, during undisturbed conditions. However, according to Crain and Booker (1964) and Thomas (1969) the effects of ions on VLF and ELF wave propagation may be significant during disturbed conditions such as a PCA or auroral absorption event. Cole and Pierce (1965) found that the dominant influence changes from electrons above to ions below at about 50 km altitude.
