Abstract

This paper deals with some of the irregular variations that occur at high latitudes (>60° invariant latitude) at ionospheric heights between about 50–100 km. In this abbreviated version of the Institute lecture we will discuss polar cap absorption (PCA) and auroral absorption (AA) events, magnetic storms, and relativistic electron precipitation (REP) events, whereas stratospheric warmings and other types of disturbances are only mentioned. Since the paper is not intended to be a topical review, I will mostly use my own data as illustrations. A more detailed discussion of these and other data is found elsewhere (Larsen 1973a, where also a more adequate list of references is given). The figure captions are made very brief, and the reader should consult the text for full details.
