Abstract
As we have already emphasized, isotopic fractionation that accompanies physicochemical phenomena is limited to the light elements (M <40). However, it is established that for a certain number of elements of high atomic mass, there are great variations in the abundances of certain isotopes. For example, if the mass spectrum of one sample of Pb is measured that has been extracted from old zircon and of another sample from a galena vein (PbS), the spectra obtained are very different (Figure 7-1).
