Comparative Study of Molecular Motion in Liquids by NMR and Neutron Spectroscopy

Abstract

Translational and rotational motions of molecules in the liquid phase are investigated using quasielastic neutron scattering and nuclear magnetic relaxation methods.

The common theoretical basis which was reviewed in a previous article of the author is extended to include internal rotational motions.

Neutron scattering data and deuteron relaxation rates were obtained for benzene, cyclohexane and methanol at different temperatures. Spin-echo self-diffusion constants were measured for cyclohexane. The experiments are evaluated on the basis of the presented theory to yield information on absolute and relative translational motion and on the rotational contribution to the quasielastic neutron scattering peak.

Résumé

Les mouvements de translation et de rotation des molécules en phase liquide sont étudiées par les méthodes de la diffusion quasi-élastique des neutrons et de la relaxation magnétique nucléaire.

La base théorique commune qui a été élaborée dans un article antérieur de l’auteur est étendue pour y inclure les mouvements de rotation interne.

Les données de diffusion de neutrons et de vitesses de relaxation des deutons ont été obtenues pour le benzène, le cyclohexane et le méthanol à différents températures. Les constantes de diffusion par spin-écho ont été mesurées pour le cyclohexane. Les expériences ont été dépoullées sur la base de la théorie présentée ci-dessus, pour obtenir des renseignements sur les mouvements de translation relative et absolue et sur la contribution rotationelle à la raie de diffusion quasi-élastique des neutrons.
