Abstract
In this work the rotational correlation functions and band moments of the perpendicular and parallel vibrations of linear molecules are compared. The application of existing theories to the parallel bands involves no difficulty, whereas the degenerate perpendicular vibrations are to be treated from the beginning in the particular case of the linear molecule.
The second and fourth infrared rotational moments of the bands have been calculated by Gordon in the most general case of the asymmetric top. The relations thus obtained may be applied to all particular cases, except to the perpendicular vibrations of linear molecules. Calculations similar to Gordon’s yield M ┴ = 1/2 M║.
Correlation functions involve the consideration of several cases. First, in the case of the free rotator, one obtains: Ф ┴(t) = 1/2 [1 + Ф ║(t)]. The others imply models. In the case of Gordon’s M and J models we have evaluated Ф ┴(t), apart from Ф║(t). Besides, the application of Steele’s method to this model leads to: [Ф┴(t)]2 = Ф║(t), a relation which exhibits a satisfactory behaviour both to short and long times.
Finally all the above results are compared to experimental data.
