Abstract
Solar proton trajectories are computed for three model magnetospheres in current use and the results are compared. The models are those of Morfill and Quenby (1971), Gall et al. (1972) and Willis and Pratt (1972). The first two model magnetospheres are based on the Mead-Williams model and the third model is an extension of the Hones-Taylor model. Generally similar results are obtained for the three models if the trajectories are terminated at 20 or 25 R E in the tail. The results are interpreted in terms of direct access of solar protons to the Earth. Results obtained using the third model for trajectories extending to 100 R E in the tail suggest that the entry of solar protons to the geomagnetic tail occurs close to the neutral sheet.
