Abstract
Early in 1959, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) requested the Department of Defense (DOD) to provide cartographic support for the DOD forces that were to be utilized in recovery operations for Project Mercury. The USAF Aeronautical Chart and Information Center (ACIC) was identified as the agency most capable of providing this support because of experience gained in satisfactory similar requirements for aircraft operations.
