The Evolution of the Problem of the Unity of Science

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Boston Studies in the Philosophy of Science ((BSPS,volume 11))

Abstract

A serious part of the excitement of science is coming upon the unexcepted. Novel facts, unanticipated experimental results, and surprising consequences of theories with which we thought we were thoroughly familiar, provide the sense of recurring ‘newness’ which is part of the fascination of the scientific pursuit. Philosophers usually aren’t as lucky, and philosophy usually lacks this quality of eternal freshness.
