Abstract
Like most neurologists of my generation I had been trained to an overwhelming skepticism toward the view that there were highly characteristic aphasic syndromes associated with different lesions of the brain. Even more forcefully I had accepted the view that any attempt at ‘explaining’ the syndromes on the basis of anatomy was a futile endeavor. Although Sir Charles Symonds had during my years at Queen Square stood almost alone against this view, I had been so caught up in the standard approach that I disregarded his perceptive teachings.
