Uncorrected refractive errors can give rise to considerable visual impairement which may become permanent. Measurements of visual acuity and ocular refraction are, therefore, important. A study of visual acuity helps in the assessment of the requirements for ophthalmic care in an entire community. The incidence of impaired vision due to refractive errors among young college students in Calcutta was studied during 1970–71.
