Abstract

New Zealand has a small freshwater fish fauna, by any standard of comparison. A precise enumeration is not yet possible as some taxonomic problems remain to be resolved, but there are about 30 native species. Eight families are represented, none of which is endemic. There are 10 genera of which only two are endemic, while all except four of 27 species formally recognised in recent studies are endemic. Thus while endemism is high at the species level, it is very low at higher taxonomic levels, suggesting that the fauna is probably not of great age.
