Abstract
As reported recently by various authors, mutants of photosynthesizing organisms can be successfully used for studying the mechanism of photosynthesis (LEVINE 1968, BISHOP 1971). Selection of appropriate mutants is the most complicated part of such investigations. Altered photosynthetic capacity and defects in pigmentation are the usual criteria for selecting mutants. Pigment mutants have often been used in investigations on the biosynthesis of chlorophylls and carotenoids and their role in the formation of chloroplast structure. But little is known (TAGAWA et al. 1963, SAGROMSKY 1975) on the contribution of certain pigments, or their combinations, to partial reactions of photosynthesis. This question has been the topic of our studies.
