Abstract

The interaction of energetic auroral electrons with atmospheric gases provides a variety of challenging problems in several areas of physics and chemistry. Electron precipitation profoundly affects the state of ionization of the atmosphere, changes the neutral composition, and produces electromagnetic radiation over a wide range of wavelengths. At this time, we believe that the major processes have been identified, and models have been constructed that tie together several observable parameters: particle fluxes, ion densities and temperatures, optical emissions, compositional changes, and others.
