Abstract

Complementing and extending the conclusions of the preceding article on Hume and causality, the following essay appeared in 1949, shortly after its presentation as a special lecture at Harvard. With palpable clarity it organizes Miller’s maturest thought and conclusions as what is involved in reasoning from experience, indicating along the way how analysis of ‘cause’, ‘self’, and ‘free will’ clarifies ordinary meanings without challenging ordinary facts.
