Abstract

The Pioneer 10 encounter with Jupiter in December 1973 marked the first time that it has been possible to make in situ measurements of a region where particle acceleration and trapping is naturally occurring other than in the Earth’s magnetosphere. Preliminary results on the particle and field environment near Jupiter have already indicated that the Jovian magnetosphere is an extremely interesting region which differs in a number of important ways from the Earth’s magnetosphere (Trainor et al., 1974; Fillius and McIlwain, 1974; Simpson et al., 1974; Van Allen et al., 1974; Smith et al., 1974; Wolfe et al., 1974).
