Interest of Quantum Mechanical Calculations for the Design of Anticancerous Drugs in the Series of Ellipticines

Molecular and Quantum Pharmacology

Abstract

Among the 38 drugs which are officially recognized by the National Institute of Health (N.I.H.) [1] as useful in the therapy of human cancer, it is very striking that the mechanism of action of the two third of them is related directly or indirectly to DNA. It is therefore logical in a search for anticancerous drugs to design molecules which might possibly modify the DNA structure or interfere with its metabolism since in many cases that can be done in a rational way.
