Abstract

Barbiturates are many things to many people. To the pharmacologist they are highly effective sedative-hypnotic agents [1]. To the physiologist they are general metabolic depressants that appear to act as competitive inhibitors in oxidative metabolism [1]. However to the biochemist they are, perhaps, most notable in their resemblance to the nucleic acid bases uracil and thymine.
